Board Game Designs from EDTEC 670
Posted 2:19 PM by Bernie Dodge on EDTECH Beach http://edweb.sdsu.edu/etbeach/index.html
My 670 class is a particularly creative bunch this year. As their first foray into game design, they developed Board Games, a task that at first seems simple. As they burrow more deeply into the design process they come to see that the tradeoffs between fidelity and simplicity and between educational impact and fun are interestingly complex. I was particularly impressed by:
Paleotopia, a game based around a dinosaur dig site;
Formula Trap, which brings area and perimeter to life;
Culture Savvy, which makes learning Hofstede's Five Cultural Dimensions fun;
Parse Game, which covers sentence parsing for linguistics students;
Feed Your Face, a nutrition game; and
Give & Take, a game of math facts.
I frequently get email from people who stumble on these designs and want to buy a copy of the actual games. I think many of them are better designed than a lot of commercial games labeled "educational".

Question and Answer Search Engine
"Unlike other Question Answering engines, BrainBoost does not rely
on human editors to locate answers. Instead, BrainBoost employs cutting-edge Artificial Intelligence technology to understand your question, and match itwith relevant answers it locates on the web."
BrainBoost is designed to let you enter search terms in natural language. It then examines your sentence, rewrites it in a way that it thinks best and submits it to various different search engines (I'm told by BrainBoost that these are Google, Google News, Teoma, WiseNut, AltaVista, Yahoo and Yahoo News). When results come in, it actually downloads all the pages listed, then extracts sections that it thinks provides the answer.

4 Blocks & Story Bits What are Story Bits? Story Bits are concrete memories that children can use to retell and share something they have read or that has been read to them. Teachers must think of what little "bit" of a story would help the children remember what has been read. Some examples follow:
Story Bits ~ the Sequel The last article on using the summer to plan for the inclusion of Story Bits as a connection home stimulated the minds of many creative teachers on the Teachers.net 4-Blocks mailring. This week we'll share with you the many bits teachers have decided to share with kids over the coming year. Besides the memory bits, perhaps you'll also read some new book titles you'll want to check out for your classroom. Many thanks to Susan for her diligence in collecting these bits for this column!

Applying Big6 Skills™,
Information Literacy Standards and ISTE NETS to Internet Research "The new education must teach the individual how to classify and reclassify information, how to evaluate its veracity, how to change categories when necessary, how to move from the concrete to the abstract and back, how to look at problems from a new direction - how to teach himself. I am currently taking a class titled Strategies for English Language Learners. I am amassing a list of resources for a presentation that I am giving in class, and I thought that the information that I have may be very beneficial to you all. So, below is my (certainly not exhaustive) list of resources for English learners:
The Internet Teaching English as a Second Language Journal
A web journal with teaching techniques, lessons, and articles. You can sign up to have an email sent to you when the new (monthly) edition is posted online.
Center for Applied Linguistics (CAL)
"CAL is a private, non-profit organization: a group of scholars and educators who use the findings of linguistics and related sciences in identifying and addressing language-related problems. CAL carries out a wide range of activities including research, teacher education, analysis and dissemination of information, design and development of instructional materials, technical assistance, conference planning, program evaluation, and policy analysis."
Teachers of English to Speakers of Other Languages (TESOL)
"TESOL articulates and advances standards for professional preparation, continuing education, and student programs; links groups worldwide to enhance communication among language specialists; produces high-quality programs, services, and products; and promotes advocacy to further the profession."
National Association for Bilingual Educators (NABE)
This was listed in the December/January 2002-3 edition of the Classroom Connect Newsletter. "Promoting educational excellence and equity through bilingual education, the National Association for Bilingual Education (NABE) is the only national organization exclusively concerned with the education of language-minority students in American schools."
The English Learner's Web Guide
Many, many links to resources for English learners.
ESL Lounge
"Free ESL lesson materials and ESL lesson plans. Printable worksheets for ESL classroom teaching. English grammar, pronunciation, board games, esl books, flashcards, board games, song lyrics and more"
ESL Magazine
"ESL Magazine is the bi-monthly, color, print magazine serving English language educators and other professionals. Drawing from decades of diverse ESL/EFL experience, top educators and other professionals keep our readers informed of the latest news, trends, methods, products and services that matter to ESL/EFL professionals. This homepage was created to give new math teachers ideas and suggestions to help with their teaching. Teaching is an on-going learning experience. You will be challenged to use many approaches and methodologies. In fact, it will seem that every year something new is expected of you to try. You must keep a balance between teaching skills and concepts and problem solving. Some students will have trouble problem solving or even working well in groups if they have very poor math skills or if they haven't grasped basic concepts. You will hear arguments about this from all sides. Children learn Mathematics in different ways and by different methods.

Exploratorium: Science Snacks by Subject
So what's a Science Snack?
Since the museum opened in 1969, teachers from the San Francisco Bay Area have brought their classes on field trips to the Exploratorium.
When we began putting this book together, we decided to do just the opposite: We wanted to take the exhibits to the kids.
For three years, nearly one hundred teachers worked with staff members to create scaled-down versions of Exploratorium exhibits. The results were dozens of exciting "Snacks" --- miniature science exhibits that teachers could make using common, inexpensive, easily available materials. By using Snacks in their classrooms, teachers can climb out of the textbooks and join their students in discovering science for themselves.

Welcome to the Journey Inside the Computer
http://www97.intel.com/scripts-tji/index.asp Go to the login button and the username is "eighthgraders" and password "eights".
Your mission is to start with the "Introduction to Computers". There's a series of pages to read and activities to do. There will be a handout for all students to place in their duotangs. Since this is going to be on the second term test one should consider this a serious assignment.
The Student Section appears to be an an online science museum filled with interactive learning activities to explore and videos to watch.
