....."Predicting winter weather is a difficult task, even for the professionals. Experts say that this winter season, which begins on December 21 at 2:21 p.m., will bring weather similar to last year, including the possibility for another Nor'easter on the East Coast, and above-average temperatures in the southwest. Whether you live in a warm or cold climate, MarcoPolo has numerous lessons and resources to help you and your students explore the symmetry of snowflakes, imagine a trip to the North or South poles, or curl up with some hot cocoa and revive the lost art of letter-writing........"

Get Ready for the Blogs
Making good on the Internet’s promise of a global village
By Leif Utne, Utne magazine
Jan / Feb 2003 Issue
"Early evangelists of the Web hailed the new medium largely for one reason: Anyone, anywhere could now be their own publisher. With nothing more than a modem, an elementary knowledge of HTML, and some basic design skills, even the humblest worker, student, or artist could put together a Web site as eye-catching and influential as anything Madison Avenue could cook up. That democratic vision is finally being realized, at least in part, in the burgeoning form of Web logs."

Grade 1 - November Issue
Our Grade 1 teacher explains classroom goals for the month of November.
Activity of the Month: Practise phonics with Kids Lab.
Report Cards
With report card time looming at the end of the month, parents of Grade 1 students often look forward to counting all the A's which their child might receive. If your first child is in Grade 1 this year, it might be helpful to be aware that the marking scheme may be somewhat different than one to which you may be accustomed. A child who meets all the expectations of the programme should receive a B or a B+. In order to receive an A, a child must "consistently exceed" the expectations - a daunting task indeed, for someone just beginning Grade 1. So celebrate those B's. It means your child is doing just fine!
Language Arts
By November, Grade 1 students have learned most of the consonant sounds and at least two or three short vowel sounds. Now it gets exciting, because they should be able to spell dozens of words simply by applying their new phonics skills! For example, if they know the consonants m,s,f,c,r,t,l, and p as well as the vowels a,i, and o, they can spell words like map, mop, tip, fast, and crop. Parents can help by asking their children to practise a few words at home each night. Don't forget to include the blends (fl, sl, fr, cr, st, etc.). Parents may find Kids Lab, a phonics web site, useful and fun.
Parents often ask why their child can easily spell a word but encounter difficulty when trying to read the same word. This is because the skills are different. Sounding out a word to spell it involves encoding. Sounding out a word to read it involves decoding. With daily practice, most children will become adept at both skills on their way to becoming readers.
Our self-selected reading block becomes quite noisy by November. This is the time when the children choose a book to read by themselves or with partners. It used to be called silent reading, but it is anything but silent in Grade 1. As they start to recognize words from either the Word Wall, class-displayed word lists or by sounding them out, they don't hesitate to spread this excitement to anyone within earshot!
Mathematics
Most Grade 1 classes will have introduced addition and subtraction by now and a great deal of the Math time is spent in consolidating the understanding of the concepts. This means lots of practice using the number line and counters. Parents can help at home by teaching their child problem-solving skills using everyday situations. For example, while setting the table for dinner, you could ask, "We have three glasses on the table already. If we put two more, how many will we have altogether?" This kind of daily practice at home and at school will help to ensure that your child has a solid grasp of adding and subtracting.
Science
In Science, we'll be dealing with some of the expectations in the Life Systems as well as Matter and Materials strands. The children will be learning to use their five senses when making observations. They will be encouraged to use more than one sense and not simply to rely on their sense of sight. Their ability to use descriptive oral language throughout the unit will be one of the tools that will be used to evaluate their progress. Some of the Math expectations in Data Management will come into play here also, as we graph some of the results of our observations. Science activities are a wonderful opportunity for children to learn group work. Learning the art of compromise is very difficult for any age group, but the skills involved can definitely be taught and encouraged at the Grade 1 level.
French
Grade 1 students will be working on vocabulary based on members of the family (maman, papa, soeur, et père) as well as occupations of the adults whom they meet at school each day (secrétaire, professeur, et directeur de l'école). They will continue to work on colours, numbers (counting to 30) and the alphabet.

Picture Stories
What is PictureStories?
Picture Stories lets you make little webpages of stories you write where some of the words are replaced with images (called "rebuses"). What makes PictureStories cool is that the images are dynamically pulled from popular web-based image search engines (like Yahoo). Lots of people have written cute little storybooks for kids that are like this, and I thought it'd be neat to be able to do your own.

Go to Surfaquarium for the html version of this week's newsletter:
Can it actually be seven years since Bernie Dodge first presented his
idea for a Web-based problem solving model that promoted
collaboration and higher-level thinking? Amazingly it has. Along the
way many practitioners have dabbled in WebQuests, some more
successfully than others. The best Quests have always stuck closely
to Dodge's original formula for WebQuest design, and these are the
kinds of Quests I sought to identify for you here. Quests are not
scavenger hunts or scrap books or virtual versions of worksheets.
They are so much more than these. The collections I offer you today
will add to your cache of teaching resources by volumes.
I opted not to include the old faithful "how to" sites and definitive
collections of the past in the hopes of offering you some new
resources you may not have been aware of. As teachers you are busy
enough and these sites don't ask you to reinvent the wheel. Just find
what approximates your needs and adapt it to your classroom. To find
other noteworthy WebQuest resources check out my WebQuest page
You can save a Quest page to your hard drive and then open it up in
Word, Composer or your favorite html editor to modify it for your
students. Just be sure to email the creator of the Quest and get
permission to use their work. Not to worry - these Quests are housed
online to share the wealth - these educators will be gratified that
you like their work enough to make use of it in your own room! Thanks
to Jerry B for his recommendations on the topic. Enjoy!
Berks County, PennsylvaniaCollection One of the more long-standing collections online and one of the more spruced-up sites, Berks County now boasts some one-hundred Quests divided into fifteen subject area categories such as Business, Careers, Foreign Language, Math, Music, Science and Social Studies. While some categories have few titles to suggest, it still makes for efficient browsing of a sizable collection. These educators also
stick closely to Dodge's format, making for quality Quests.
Catawba County, North Carolina -
http://www.catawba.k12.nc.us/webquest/
Here's fifty teacher-created WebQuests (with more promised to be
coming soon) made through the TechTraC program. Quests are listed
with grade level indicators and there are some imaginative approaches
here: Surfing with Dr. Seuss, Catch March Madness, This Bod's for You
and Something's "Phishy" in NC Waters speak well for the collection.
These pages are very nicely formatted; if the presentation of your
content is important to you, then this may be the place to begin
looking.
Conn Global Communications Elementary School -
http://connes.wcpss.net/WebQuest/
Imagine one K-5 school that showcases forty - count 'em - forty-one
WebQuests! Conn breaks them down by individual grade levels, and
while K-3 has fewer to claim as their own, fourth and fifth grades
more than make up for it. K Rozar has her own page of a variety of
Quests and there's even two WebQuests for parents covering emergent
reading and inappropriate behaviors in the classroom. The nice thing
about the design of this page is that it's easy to find appropriate
Quests for each audience.
Florida State English Education WebQuests -
http://www.fsu.edu/~CandI/ENGLISH/web.htm
David Medicus and colleagues present this collection of sixty-nine
WebQuests all built by students at the college of education at
Florida State. They are broken down into secondary and elementary
titles, and they are annotated to let you know what the focus of each
Quest is. Titles include The Chocolate War, Stellaluna, Lord of the
Flies, The Scarlet Letter, The Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy and
twelfth Night.
Guilford County, North Carolina -
http://its.guilford.k12.nc.us/webquests/
Here's a collection of teacher-generated WebQuests that are broken
down with more granularity than most: Grades K-2, 3, 4, 5, 6-8 and 9-
12. The descriptive annotations of each title help to save you time
and give you an idea of what is of value to you. Any support
materials and activity sheets needed to complete these Quests are
embedded right in the web pages. You'll find the topics here are
straightforward and easily adaptable to any state curriculum.
Instructional Technology Services of Central Ohio -
http://www.itsco.org/webquest/gallery.html
This page was so slick in its presentation I really did some digging
to make sure it had some substance to offer.....and it did! Here are
thirty plus Quests made by educators taking the WebQuest class
offered by ITSCO. The instructional quality is consistently high and
the occasional formatting issue is a gentle reminder that these are
created by real educators learning right along with us. There's a
nice emphasis on the assessment component and range of topics makes
it a pleasure to peruse.
Jackie Carrigan's Graduate Class WebQuests -
http://www.plainfield.k12.in.us/hschool/webquest.htm
Jackie's grad students complete these Quests as part of their course
work and she showcases them here online to share with the rest of us.
You can view the collection by subject area or grade level, with more
than one-hundred different Quests catalogued here. Some of the
catchier titles include Should Students Wear School Uniforms?, What
event has had the biggest impact on technology and Let's Move the
United States Capitol.
Memphis City, Tennessee - http://www.memphis-
schools.k12.tn.us/admin/tlapages/web_que.htm
You'll find eighty WebQuests here developed by Memphis City Schools'
talented teachers, sorted by grade levels and listed alphabetically.
Faithfully following the Dodge format, these Quests run the gamut
from standard topics found in all curricula to original treatment of
unique content. Consider these titles: My Life as a Shark, Rumble On
The River, Booker T vs W.E.B. and Will that Volcano Spoil Our Party?
New Mexico State University -
http://education.nmsu.edu/webquest/examples.html
Carmen Gonzales and students in the Learning Technologies Program at
New Mexico State University put together this collection of sixty
plus WebQuests presented in a matrix of subject area and grade level
to help you pinpoint those Quests which are best suited for your
students. Several of the Quests are presented in both English and
Spanish (In Search of Our Roots, El Camino Real: Back to the Future,
Yerbas y Remedios: A New Look) and there's an occasional dead link.
Overall this site is worth your consideration.
Spartanburg, South Carolina -
http://www.spa3.k12.sc.us/WebQuests.html
These district 3 educators have put together a collection of home
grown WebQuests that include a lot of support materials, theoretical
and practical considerations, assessments and links to other WebQuest
collections around the Web. Some intriguing titles include In the Eye
of the Storm, Impressionism, The Love Canal Debate and For Love of
the Game?
Stonewall Traditional Elementary -
http://www.stonewall.fayette.k12.ky.us/wq/wq.htm
This Quest collection from Lexington, Kentucky is an alchemy of
original WebQuests and links to other high quality Quests developed
by educators from around the world. The common denominator is
quality, as this collection faithfully subscribes to Dodge's formula
and offers a nice array of choices from K -5. And while the K
activities may not be true Quests, they still give you ideas for
using technology in the classroom. If you're a primary teacher
looking for age-approrpiate tasks online this is a good place to
start.
University of Richmond -
http://oncampus.richmond.edu/academics/as/education/projects/webquests
.html
Richmond students showcase eighty-four WebQuests here, presented in
categories of Art and English, Foreign Language and Social Studies
and Math and Science. Each Quest is labeled with an intended grade
level, an indication of when it was last revised, and markers for new
Quests recently added. Titles include are Restoring the Nike,
Rewriting Wuthering Heights, Put Words in My Mouth, Murder in the
Tropics and Dolphin-Safe Tuna?
Yorkville, Illinois Community School District -
http://www.yorkville.k12.il.us/webquests/webquests.htm
Yorkville offers sixty WebQuests for your consideration, listed by
grade level and annotated to give you an idea of what each has to
offer. Titles include A Quest for Respect with The Grouchy Ladybug,
Be a Good Citizen with Miss Rumphius, The Colonial Antique Road Show,
Plastics By the Number, Using the Number "e" for Population Growth
Analysis and Travels with Forrest Gump - Creating a commemorative
magazine.

Teaching Community's LiveJournal Tonight is open house, and this afternoon I taught a lesson and the output from the studenst was better than I expected, and I have this AWESOME bulletin board that I created and the parents can see that I do some work in this room. (Rather than being that stranger the kids talk about).
***Begin Brag***
My lesson involved this Chinese fable. I introduced the story by showing the kids a fortune cookie and explaining how the story they were going to read is like the fortune inside "fortunes predict what will happen in our lives and/or tell us how to live as good people. Fables teach us lesson that tell us how to live as good people."
After we read the story, I had the children try to figure out what some morals meant (i.e., treat others as you want to be treated, etc") Then the students had to make up their own moral. I almost cried when this boy wrote "Love and trust others" He was a hard worker. I then got in a use of technology (I have to use 18 this semester) and had them type their sentences on the computer.
This afternoon I took brown paper circles and folded them into fortune cookies and slipped their "morals" inside. The parents will love the "Always brush your teeth". I had to let that one in...
I then stapled all of the "cookies" to the bb. Too awesome. I also made a header and a sheet that tells parents that the students have been studying folktales and morals.
*** END BRAG***

Weblogg-Ed
Will Richardson's thoughts...
"1. Professional weblogs—where teachers track their own planning/research/thoughts about what’s happening in their classrooms and school. Takes minimum set up and little maintenance.
2. Course weblog—where teachers can update assignments, notes and links for a particular class. Can be “sold” as a way to communicate classroom activities to parents and community, to give students an idea of what the class is about, to keep track of makeup work for absent students. Low setup and maintenance.
3. Group weblog—where students in a class or members of a department or community become active participants in the discussion. Larger group weblogs require a moderator to define groups and lead discussion. In classroom setting, can be used for feedback. In other settings used for idea exchange, dissemination of information, etc. Small group weblogs could be used for students to track/show work on projects. Low setup, higher maintenance.
4. Student weblogs—where each student creates and maintains individual weblogs. Uses include tracking time for individualized work, entering into give and take feedback discussions with instructor, online filing cabinets (Diaryland), research logs, etc. Can be used to encourage metacognitive (thinking about thinking) work. High setup, low maintenance.
5. Combinations—where teachers employ any number of these logs in tandem. A course weblog could keep track of the business and planning side of the class while small group and individual weblogs could focus on student learning and achievement.
Questions to be explored: What are the benefits of weblogs over more traditional ways of classroom management (i.e. giving assignments, tracking notes, organizing and tracking work handed in)? How can weblogs be most effectively introduced into the classroom or community setting? What skills are needed to make the best use of weblogs (i.e. HTML, Internet)? What training and resources are needed? What software/hardware implications are there (served locally or remotely)? Assessment of weblogs (rubrics, requirements)? Internet connectivity of students/groups?

Soda Play
A construction kit for ... crafting curious constructions and exhibiting their creations for all to see and play and experiment!
Working together since October 1996, soda are a group of artists, researchers, designers and developers. We formed in order to steer the development and funding of our own areas of practice. Although this practice covers a broad range of individual interests, the group is held together by common views on technology and art. We are interested in developing languages, structures and installations in a way that will push the field of contemporary art practice in terms of both context and form. what we do We have a range of technical skills from communications, design, education, software< development, to electronics and mechanical engineering.
These skills allow us to develop projects that employ technologies on an investigative level within our practice. This emphasis on research and development, and the fine art practice of members of Soda, comes together in our methodology that underlies both our commercial and non-commercial work. see www.soda.co.uk sodaconstructor 1999 Ed Burton A construction kit for two-dimensional wiry walkers.
A bouncy virtual model of springs, muscles and masses. A toy. Sodaconstructor started life as the private plaything of its creator, a distracting dynamic building set made purely for fun. Since being made accessible on the internet sodaconstructor popularity exploded and took on a creative direction all of its own. Now many thousands of people across the world are crafting curious constructions and exhibiting their creations for all to see and play with in the sodazoo.

Teaching Ideas for Primary Teachers 'Teaching Ideas' is for teachers who teach primary-age children (i.e. ages 5
to 11). Although it has been designed with UK teachers in mind, all ideas can of course be used by teachers around the world.
The ideas, activities and worksheets are organized according to a number ofsubjects (those covered in the English National Curriculum):
There is also an area on the site entitled "Time-Fillers". The ideas which fall into this category may fall into a number of subject areas, and they are ideal for use as short activities which can be used to fill a few spare moments during the day. The "Early Years" section contains ideas for use
with children aged 5 or below, and the "Foreign Languages" area has resources for those teachers who wish to teach a different language to their
children.

Misunderstood Minds Everyone should go here and try this stuff. Experience learning to read and write and listen from a different perspective go on see if you can do it. Learning difficulties site. Misunderstood Minds: the documentary
For one in five students, learning is an exhausting and frustrating struggle. Often mistakenly called "lazy" or "stupid" by their teachers, classmates, and even their families, these children may be suffering from debilitating learning problems. If not addressed, the problems can have a devastating impact on the students' self-esteem and future academic and social success.
The PBS documentary Misunderstood Minds shines a spotlight on this painful subject, following the stories of five families as, together with experts, they try to solve the mysteries of their children's learning difficulties. Produced and directed by renowned Frontline filmmaker Michael Kirk, this 90-minute special shows the children's problems in a new light, and serves as a platform to open a nationwide dialogue on how best to manage young, vulnerable, and misunderstood minds.

eThemes: Online Resources for Educators
What is eThemes?
eThemes is an extensive database of content-rich, age-appropriate resources organized around specific themes. These resources are created for educators to use in their classrooms.
How Does eThemes Work?
The first step is for teachers participating in the eMINTS Program to fill out an online eThemes request. Resource Scouts, graduate students trained in navigating the Internet, search the Web for child-safe sites. The Scouts write a short description about each site and assign appropriate grade levels and Show-Me Standards to the eThemes resource. The resource then is entered into the online database for all educators to access.
